Weekend leafletting
Over the last few days I have spent time delivering my latest leaflet.
This leaflet sets out in more detail my policies and ideas for Southfield and a little more information about the work I have been doing in the area.
While delivering, I have had the opportunity to speak to a number of residents and I have been incredibly heartened by the enthusiasm for my goal of offering a new direction for Southfield based on positive and proactive politics.
Over the next 10 days in the run up to the election I will be out and about in the ward and I hope to speak to more residents to hear your concerns and your views on the issues that matter.
If you would prefer, please get in touch with me by email at: cf@pendleconservatives.com
Email, alongside this website, are just two ways that I am trying to improve and widen communications with my fellow residents and I appreciate feedback.

What a beautiful weekend!
I took the opportunity to get out and about in the area and enjoy this weekend’s beautiful weather.
Whilst walking around the ward I noticed the road surface at the junction of Barkerhouse Road and Pine Street is worn out with cobbles showing through the tarmac. Another unsightly pothole exists on Netherfield Road a third of the way up the Newfield Drive flats complex. I have also noted badly rutted surfaces on Hallam Road close to the Buoyant Upholstery plant.
It is good to go out walking around the area, as it enables me to make notes of what needs doing and where problems exist. These opportunities are particularly good for me to keep abreast of how issues I have reported to both Pendle Council and Lancashire County Council are being attended to. In addition, I can speak to fellow residents where the opportunity arises, so that I can keep up to date with any concerns they have.
For example, on a recent visit residents raised with me the issue of antisocial behaviour taking place around the Clough Head Play area. As a result I have walked the roadway between Wickworth Street and Marsden Hall Road South a couple of times after dark so that I can see the situation for myself.
This is the kind of partnership I want to develop if I am elected on May 3rd – me and the community working together to get things done.

Its time for a public transport review.
I am an enthusiastic supporter of public transport, and work in the passenger transport industry. I travel by bus to get to and from work every day and when I go out and about at the weekend. Such is my personal interest in public transport, I am a member of the national transport user’s group Bus Users UK.
The last review of public transport services serving Southfield was a complete disaster for those of us who rely on public transport. In particular I am frustrated that we have no proper public transport service after 6pm, or on Sundays, on either the Marsden Park Circular or Valley Mills services. This means public transport users are extremely restricted as to what travel options we have in the evenings. Anyone wishing to go into town at those times is left with the choice of either an expensive taxi ride or walking.
I believe it is necessary to have a review of the public transport provision we have in Nelson as a whole both in the evening and at weekends, to assess where we can go with regard to improving the current situation. Improving Public Transport must be a priority.
If you have any views on this issue please get in touch with me. I would appreciate your perspective on public transport in our ward.

Action Day

On April 1st, I organised an Action Day in Southfield to illustrate and help tackle the litter problem we have in parts of the ward.
We concentrated our efforts on a piece of land at the end of Fletcher Street and managed to fill four bin bags alone with rubbish. Furthermore we found half a motorised scooter had been dumped in a hedge! (See photo) Even more concerning was the large amount of glass that had been smashed in the area.
Since the Action Day I have contacted the council to inform them about the glass and I hope that it will soon be cleared up.
I strongly believe in this joint approach to tackling the litter problems in our area. Of course the council have the primary role in keeping our streets clean, but I think there is a place for a team of local volunteers to help out from time to time.
This Action Day symbolises the new direction I am building my campaign on. Rather than just delivering leaflets talking about problems, I feel its important to be proactive, not just reactive to issues that arise and get involved in solving the problems we face as a community.
I will be organising other Action Days in the future. If you want to help me out or have an issue you want me to look at, please get in touch with me by phone 01282 614748 or email me on: pmckenna73@hotmail.com

Welcome
Welcome to my website!
I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to stand for election in my home ward of Southfield in this year’s Pendle Borough Council Elections to be held on Thursday 3rd May.
I have lived in Southfield all my life and I love the area, but I have grown increasingly frustrated and angry by the litter, graffiti and vandalism that are all too common around our streets.
I am committed to protecting and improving our local environment. I will not make grand promises, but will pursue straightforward and realistic policies.
-
Cleaner Streets are safer and look more pleasant. I will build a social action partnership between the the council and the local community in order to help reduce the litter on our streets and enable us to prosecute those involved in illegal fly tipping.
-
Safer roads & pavements - potholes, worn out surfaces and uneven paving are major hazards for us all. I will work with you all to locate problems faster and with Lancashire County Council to resolve them more effectively.
-
Tackling Absent Landlords - Far too many properties lie empty in Southfield, negatively impacting on our local environment and pushing house prices down. We need a comprehensive review of empty properties in the ward and we need to ensure owners take responsibilty for their management.
I will be running a positive campaign putting Southfield first. Over the coming days and weeks I will be getting out and about talking to as many of you as possible about the issues that need to be addressed.
I hope that this website will provide you with more details about me, my policies for the ward and keep you updated on the work I am doing.
If you would like to get in touch with me please feel free to contact me by phone on 01282 614748 or by email at cf@pendleconservatives.com
Its time for a new direction in Southfield; I believe I can offer it.
Best Wishes,
Paul McKenna
